Honorable Mention
Eggs Gathered in the Bulrush
Gary Blankenship

the boy, salvation of drought poor farmers,
drowns in less than two inches of water

the girl, no one to drive her to the Bluff
Saturday nights, turns from buried promises

the wife, stuck between stove, wringer
and runny noses, over-salts cornbread batter

the husband, neglected, searches the future
in longneck bottles, empties over the Bluff

the grandfather, now lost between the day
his brother killed and his fiancée won as his own

the grandmother, melanoma dead one year
to the day her grandson shallow-drowned

his baby born in the season pintails
nest in bulrushes and bullfrogs wait for summer

(inspired by the movie, The Stone Boy, details
in the work above nothing like those in the flick)
